Recently, Wanda, Wayne, Liz, and I met together for a first get-acquainted dinner at a nearby Indian restaurant. We each have different life stories and differing reasons for being in Penang, Malaysia. Turns out that Wayne spent part of his growing-up years with relatives here in Penang. Liz had been on her way to India when she found herself going to Malaysia instead. Wanda is just traveling and discovering. And, I’m…well, I’m just happy to be here. We shared several vegetarian dishes and rice and topped it all off with various desserts. We laughed and talked until the meal came. And, then, silence, as we savored the delicious fare in front of us. Each meal is truly a gift here. Served with a flourish and care. Which prompted the comment, “Ah, the quiet of the eat.” Lentil and chickpea, okra (called “ladyfingers” here), cauliflower and potato, spinach, paneer, roti, mango, and more. And rice, of course. The “quiet of the eat” is almost a prayer of gratitude for the deliciousness in front of us and the joy of invigorating company. Ah, life is good and the belly is full. P.S. This gastronomic delight only cost each of us $9.52 for several courses and dessert. Oh, my, oh my.
